You see them everywhere, on top of canopy beds, fences, gates and other architectural elements. The jewel has a long history and rich history dating back to ancient Greece. In fact, they were "signatures", or a clever way to distinguish land from a man from another. Originally conceived of sandstone and marble, old landmarks were quite large and could command a high price.
Today Of course, we made jewels virtually anything and everything. Tips have found their place on the fields and pastures of the ancient world, and our homes and public spaces in ways too numerous to count. small finials were considered ornamental shade, the chain of a fan ceiling pulls, hood ornaments, toppers flagpole, the tire valve, even rod caps, and the list continues.
And why not? After all, they are attractive and flowers, lending an aesthetic appeal otherwise boring architectural elements. One could even argue that the pride is essential to solid home design principles.
With hundreds or even thousands of sizes and designs available finial, and coming on materials ranging from plastic, brass, copper, steel, chrome, concrete, marble, mahogany, cedar, redwood, or any conceivable combination of the above, you'll get a lot of fun to watch a little jewel right.
So what can you do with them, in addition to the uses listed above? Try some of these possibilities in size, and see if a jewel can not be used for something functional or flowery in places you would not have ever stopped to consider.
Book Ends - Collect different styles, and we use to support rows of books on the shelves. They add detail and interest shelves for books otherwise dull. Mix and match for a more eclectic feeling.
Door stops - We have a long corridor in a part of our house with one door halfway down. The corridor can act almost like a wind tunnel when an exterior door is opened on a windy day, and the door suddenly (and with great force) slam shut. We tried a few things over the years to keep the door ajar in the open position, but somewhere along the way, we took a solid gem stone of about 14 pounds, and placed it as a doorstop. Not only is he does what he is supposed to do in this small role, but he does it with finesse and grace. Dozens of people have commented that a single door we were stopped!
Centers - A combination of an odd number of landmarks of different shapes, sizes and materials can be a central theme of architecture wonderful on a side table or a dining table. We hope to collect jewels, so it is easy to post news this way, a chance to break all the details of social functions that we host periodically.
Candlestick Holders - At a garage sale a few years ago, I found some pineapple finials weathered old who had served their usefulness in the sun at the top of the fence someone. Their altered state what caused most people to spend on them, but to me they were exactly why I wanted them. I bought them all for a pittance, took home, and with the help of my husband drilled a hole large enough at the top of each. The hole was the perfect size for candles beeswax taper had in a drawer. This Thanksgiving, they served as a soft light along the ramp in the lobby where our guests have come to share a meal with us.
Paper Weight - Okay, that sounds corny I know, but I found that the weight of bond paper is not used to much more than mere possession of documents at a desk. An ideal paper weight should have something interesting about it, because you'll be looking at a lot. For me, tips are interesting. I think I will pick the flagship Mahogany heavy on my desk while on the phone, simply return it in my hands, enjoying the view, and admire the lines of the artist and craft complex sculpture.
So many things look great with the addition of a finial or post cap. A natural favorite are the beautiful wood finials.
